TCDC Side Event: National TB Prevention and Control Program toward the Goal of TB Elimination

In accordance with the UN/WHO objectives to end TB epidemic by 2030/2035, the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (TCDC) is convening this side event to foster the exchange of insights among countries regarding TB control and prevention at the national level. The participating countries, spanning different levels of TB burdens, include Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, and Taiwan. During the event, presenters will discuss the latest TB prevention and control strategies implemented in their respective countries, encompassing long-term goals for TB elimination, recent progress, the framework of national TB prevention and control program (NTP), public-private models for TB healthcare, impact of COVID-19pandemics on TB prevention and control and future strategy, and success stories from TB programs.

Dr. Guy Marks

Professional Experience:

Guy Marks AO FAHMS is Scientia Professor at UNSW Sydney and Physician in the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Liverpool Hospital, Sydney. He was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences in 2020 and appointed Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2022. He is a respiratory physician (pulmonologist), public health physician and epidemiologist. Since 2019, he has been President of the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease. His clinical practice at Liverpool Hospital includes clinical and public health management of people with TB. His research, both in Australia and in Vietnam, focuses on public health approaches to ending tuberculosis as well as the health effects of air pollution, safe air, and chronic respiratory disease.

Provide leadership, oversight and management of the National Tuberculosis (TB) Programme
Work with the Ministry of Health to develop policies and strategies to end TB in Singapore
To provide expert advice and liaise with relevant stakeholders on clinical and policy matters

Oversee the screening of TB contacts

Dr. Anita Pei-Chun Chan

Professional Experience:

Dr. Anita Chan is presently the Deputy Director at the Division of Chronic Infectious Diseases, the Centers for Disease Control, Ministry of Health and Welfare, Taiwan (Taiwan CDC). She also serves as Associate Director at the Tuberculosis Research Center, Taiwan CDC. Her other positions include Standing Committee of Taiwan Guidelines for TB Diagnosis and Treatment, Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Institute of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, College of Public Health, National Taiwan University, Taiwan. She has more than 15 years of experience on policy implementation for TB control. Important operational research papers had been published to prove the effectiveness of policy implementation of TB/HIV/STD. Her main research interests are tuberculosis, infection control, vaccination, ethics and law of notifiable diseases, and infectious diseases.

Dr. Erlina Burhan

Professional Experience:

For over two decades, Dr. Erlina Burhan, MSc, PhD, has been a dedicated pulmonologist specializing in lung infections, with a primary focus on tuberculosis (TB). She is renowned for her expertise and practices at Persahabatan National Respiratory Referral Hospital, the leading center for TB care in Indonesia. Dr. Burhan has played a pivotal role in initiating and advancing the country’s drug-resistant TB program, including the early introduction of short treatment regimens. Over the past ten years, she has been instrumental in promoting the public-private partnership model for delivering TB services in Indonesia. Additionally, she holds prominent positions on advisory boards of multiple non-governmental organizations dedicated to TB care and serves as the Chair of the professional coalition for TB in the country.

Dr. Burhan’s expertise also extends to academia, where she imparts her knowledge as a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Indonesia. Her remarkable contributions include significant roles in more than 20 clinical and observational trials conducted in Indonesia. Beyond her clinical and academic pursuits, she is actively engaged in public education efforts aimed at TB elimination and combating the societal stigma associated with the disease. Dr. Burhan effectively utilizes social media platforms to amplify her mission.
