Symposium 12:NTM Diagnosis and Treatment

While previously being considered as clinical insignificant pathogens, there has been explosive awareness of NTM in recent two decades. Among various NTM diseases in human, NTM-LD is the most common disease entity. NTM-LD could lead insidious deteriorating clinical course and cause lung destruction as well as function decline if left untreated. One major obstacle in the diagnosis of NTM-LD is that isolation of NTM does not equal to clinical diagnosis. Clinical relevance of NTM in patients with isolation of NTM from respiratory samples is not always straightforward. Before starting medical treatment for NTM-LD, we should not neglect non-pharmacologic treatment, including pulmonary rehabilitation, nutrition support, and vaccination for Streptococcus pneumoniae and influenza. In addition, surgical management is an important component of NTM-LD treatment. Optimal management for NTM-LD requires multi-disciplinary approach.
